Management of excessive earwax
“Resolution is often sought as a matter of urgency as the ear suddenly becomes blocked by the earwax.”
Patients cannot see inside their own ear canals as excessive earwax builds, leading to an urgent need for treatment. Patients will have what appears to be normal hearing up the moment where the ear becomes completely blocked.
Patients may find the ongoing use of oil does not resolve the problem, especially of they wear hearing aids. It is common for us to see patients produce earwax that will not thin out and run out of the ear canal naturally even without the use of hearing aids that push the earwax back into the canal for the hours they are worn. The use of oils may help make a small hole in the earwax that will give an apparent normal level of hearing back. However, often the ear(s) continue to block periodically, often in the mornings. This can lead to routine use of oils and suffering from itchy and recurrently blocking ear(s). Poor hearing will also affect a patients work and social interaction.
If a patient has treatment for the removal of excessive earwax, we advise making a further follow-up appointment before the ear is likely to become blocked again. Especially prior to taking a holiday in warmer countries.
At Ear Clinic, we can agree a follow-up timescale with patients during their initial appointment and send a complimentary reminder by post. Managing the problem is far better before the ear is occluded with earwax and the need becomes urgent. However, the need for proper management of excessive earwax without unfairly profiting from patients, is essential. So the time intervals are always agreed with caution.
We are committed to educating patients on the importance of routine management, for those who regularly require intervention. Working with patients we ensure they do not experience blocked ears or attend costly routine appointments unnecessarily.
