Attending Clinic - What Happens?

Welcome

When you arrive at Lymington Business Centre, you will enter directly into the waiting area. You will need to read some information about attending the appointment and sign a consent form. Take a clipboard from the table on your right and a seat to the left whilst you wait.

In the rare event there are any delays, we will inform you.

The Appointment

Once you enter Ear Clinic you can relax and take a seat. The specialist will ask you some questions about your health that relate directly to your treatment. You can discuss your health without feeling rushed, as we allow a full 30 minutes for your consultation.

Oto-endoscopy

We will use the latest endoscope technology to view the health of the ear. An endoscope provides the greatest level of image clarity and light, providing excellent vision good enough to carry out surgery. Patients typically find this very interesting, however, if you would prefer not to look, please do let us know.

Education

There is a choice of large monitors that display the endoscope’s visual field. The patient and the specialist can therefore, view and discuss together, the now visible problem. Understanding the cause and the recommended treatment is important. It may also be necessary to consider the need for ongoing management should the problem be known to reoccur.

Should a patient present at this stage with no excessive earwax requiring treatment, then the appointment will be closed, and no charge will be made.

Aural Care Treatments

Microsuction at Ear Clinic is the most common method of removing excessive earwax. There are other methods of removing earwax that maybe required to complete a treatment. Please see Learn More at the bottom of the page for more information on each method.

During your treatment you will be seated in a fully adjustable electronic chair. The specialist can without effort, place your ear in the correct position to complete the treatment as safely as possible.

The latest powerful LED microscope provides excellent vision with depth perception when working in the ear canal. Other equipment in the form of a high definition camera and video are employed. Most of the equipment required during treatment is either fully automatic or manually controlled by the specialist using foot pedals. This ensures their hands are free to minimise risk and work efficiently.

Regardless of cost, all our microsuction instruments are single use (disposable) to reduce risk.

A small cannula (suction tube) is connected to a vacuum source to provide air suction through the cannula. The tip of the cannula is placed in the ear canal and where it touches the earwax, it is drawn up though the cannula and out of the ear. The suction cannula’s tip may also fix to the surface of the earwax and removed with the cannula. Because the suction takes place in the ear canal, it appears noisy and you may get the feeling of the ear cooling as the air moves (venturi effect).

Moisturise and trim

Research has shown that for some, using water (irrigation) to remove excessive earwax, causes the ear to produce more earwax in response. Microsuction is a dry method of earwax removal and we have found that most patients who came to us with the need for routine earwax removal, had the frequency of their appointments halved within two years.

Following irrigation and sometimes microsuction, we use a special atomiser to replace oils and moisture lost during treatment. This appears to help the ear function normally following treatment.

For gentlemen, we will also trim excessive ear hair.

Validation, review and plan

A great comfort to patients is to see the images of their ears before and after treatment. This is especially the case when patients have put off obtaining help, just like that visit to the Dentist! Patients can then understand the level excessive wax and make a sensible decision on a timescale to book a reminder and finally start to manage the problem, before their ears become blocked.
